Scientists develop serum that may help mammals regrow limbs

Scientists say they have developed a serum capable of triggering tissue regeneration in mammals, raising hopes for future breakthroughs in healing severe injuries.

Researchers at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences say they have developed a serum that can trigger limb tissue regeneration in mammals.

In a study published in Nature Communications, scientists explained how the process mimics “epimorphic regeneration,” the mechanism salamanders use to regrow lost limbs.

The researchers used a two-step method that first reduces scarring before activating signals that encourage cells to form a blastema, a structure essential for tissue regrowth.

“This is really a two-step process,” researcher Ken Muneoka said.

“You first shift the cells away from scarring, and then you provide the signals that tell them what to build.”

The experiments were carried out on lab mice. Scientists said the findings could eventually improve healing and tissue repair in humans following traumatic injuries.
