WHO raises alarm as Ebola deaths climb in DR Congo, Uganda

The WHO has warned that the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda may be far larger than reported as deaths rise and cases spread across borders.

The World Health Organization has raised concern over the worsening Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda after deaths climbed to 131.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was “deeply concerned about the scale and speed” of the outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo virus in DR Congo’s northeastern Ituri province.

More than 500 suspected cases have been recorded, while 30 infections were confirmed in Ituri. Uganda also reported two confirmed cases in Kampala.

The WHO declared the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern” on Sunday, warning the increasing infections suggest “a potentially much larger outbreak.”

The United States has restricted entry from affected areas after an American tested positive in DR Congo. Africa CDC criticised the move, saying “broad travel bans can disrupt lives and economies.”
