John Bolton to plead guilty in classified documents case

John Bolton, the former US national security adviser and longtime critic of President Donald Trump, is expected to plead guilty in a high-profile classified documents case.

According to The Washington Post, Bolton plans to admit to one count of retaining national defence information and has agreed to pay a $2.25 million fine as part of a plea deal. A change-of-plea hearing has been scheduled for June 26.

Federal prosecutors had initially charged Bolton with 18 counts linked to the alleged mishandling of classified materials, including sensitive records from his time in the Trump administration.

The report says the case centres on allegations that Bolton shared classified information while preparing a book and stored sensitive documents improperly. If accepted by the court, the plea agreement could still leave him facing possible prison time.
