Flesh-eating screwworm resurfaces in US for first time in 60 years

A flesh-eating parasite once thought eliminated from the United States has resurfaced in Texas, sparking swift action from authorities.

As Anadolu Agency reports, the US Department of Agriculture confirmed the discovery of a New World screwworm in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County, marking the first known livestock case in the country since 1966.

The parasite’s larvae burrow into the flesh of living animals, causing severe injuries and potentially costly losses for farmers. Officials have moved quickly, imposing quarantines, movement restrictions and enhanced surveillance within a 20-kilometre affected zone.

The USDA is also releasing sterile flies to curb the pest’s spread. Authorities say the risk to humans, pets and food safety remains low.
