As Trump meets Xi, Iran lets Chinese ships through Strait of Hormuz

Iran has begun allowing select Chinese ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz following Beijing’s diplomatic intervention, even as maritime tensions and vessel seizures persist in the region.

Iran has authorized some Chinese vessels to transit the strategic Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic outreach from Beijing. According to the New York Times, semiofficial Iranian agencies reported the crossings began Wednesday, coinciding with President Trump’s visit to China to discuss the global energy crisis.

The move highlights China’s growing leverage, as the U.S. urges Beijing to pressure Tehran to reopen the waterway. However, analysts remain skeptical. Tomer Raanan of Lloyd’s List noted that since Iran dictates transit, the strait is “not really open.” The diplomatic shift follows statements from Iran’s ambassador to China, claiming the partnership proves Iran has “real options” against U.S. pressure. Despite the opening for China, regional instability continues; British naval agencies reported an unauthorized seizure of a vessel near Fujairah on Thursday.
