German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned Iran’s Revolutionary Guards for humiliating their own people, warned that the Strait of Hormuz had been partially mined, and questioned the United States’ exit strategy in the ongoing war.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday declared that an entire nation was being oppressed by its own government, telling students in Marsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia: “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards.” He added that Iranian officials were negotiating with the United States “very skillfully” and appeared stronger than previously thought.
Merz also raised alarm over regional security, saying the Strait of Hormuz had been partially mined, threatening critical global shipping lanes. The German chancellor further expressed uncertainty over Washington’s handling of the conflict, stating he did not see what exit strategy the United States was pursuing in the war.
