Israel, Lebanon agree to extend ceasefire by 45 days after talks in Washington

The United States has announced a 45-day ceasefire extension between Israel and Lebanon to allow for political settlement talks, despite ongoing deadly Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their ceasefire by 45 days to pursue a permanent political settlement, the United States announced Friday. According to France24, the diplomatic breakthrough comes despite ongoing Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, which Israel maintains are separate from the truce because they target Hezbollah.

State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott confirmed the extension “to enable further progress,” adding that military delegations will meet on May 29, followed by political negotiations in June. Envoys hope the talks will secure lasting border security, though the reality on the ground remains grim.

Strikes near Tyre wounded dozens, drawing condemnation from UN humanitarian coordinator Imran Riza, who noted daily demolitions continue with “an unacceptable toll on civilians and civilian infrastructure.” Israel’s ambassador Yechiel Leiter remained optimistic, stating, “there will be ups and downs, but the potential for success is great.”
