Senator Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized since June 14 with his office declining to disclose the reason, even after dispatcher recordings suggested CPR was performed on someone at his Washington address.
MCCONNELL HOSPITALIZED FOR 3 WEEKS, AIDES WON’T SAY WHY
Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, has been hospitalized since June 14, with his office offering few details on his condition, The New York Times reports.
The latest statement, issued Thursday, said McConnell “continues to improve” and is working with staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the chamber is out of session. His office has not disclosed what prompted the hospitalization or what treatment he is receiving.
Dispatcher recordings obtained by The Times showed emergency responders performing CPR on an unconscious individual undergoing cardiac arrest at McConnell’s Washington address the morning he was hospitalized, though the recordings do not name him directly. His office has declined to comment on the recordings.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Whip John Barrasso said they had spoken with McConnell, with Thune describing him as “clearly dialed into what’s going on.”
This is McConnell’s latest health scare, following a week-long hospitalization in February for flulike symptoms and a 2023 concussion from a fall. He has used a wheelchair in recent months to move around the Capitol complex.
McConnell is not seeking re-election and will retire from the Senate in January, with Representative Andy Barr set to succeed him after winning the Republican primary in May.
