NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman publicly declared his support for restoring Pluto’s planetary status, saying his agency is actively preparing papers to push the scientific community to revisit the debate.
The decades-long debate over Pluto just got a high-profile ally. During an April 28 Senate budget hearing, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman made his position crystal clear: “Senator, I am very much in the camp of ‘make Pluto a planet again.'”
The International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of its planet status in 2006, reclassifying it as a dwarf planet after determining it hadn’t cleared its orbital neighborhood in the Kuiper Belt. Isaacman believes that decision deserves a second look, and NASA is taking action. “We are doing some papers right now on, I think, a position that we would love to escalate through the scientific community to revisit this discussion,” he added. The final call still belongs to the IAU — but Pluto finally has a powerful voice in its corner.
