A newly discovered species of sea slug has been named after Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha in honour of his standout performances at this summer’s World Cup.
Sea Slug Named After Cape Verde’s World Cup Hero Vozinha
Vozinha’s World Cup heroics just earned him a permanent spot in the animal kingdom. Spanish researcher Jesus Ortea has named a newly discovered species of tiny red sea slug — found near Havana and Guadeloupe — “Aldisa vozinhai” in the goalkeeper’s honour, The Athletics report.
The tribute, published in Ortea’s book Historias de la Bioadversidad, coincides with Vozinha’s standout tournament, including a man-of-the-match display against Spain. At 40, Vozinha became the oldest player to debut in a nation’s first-ever World Cup game, and his Instagram following has since exploded from 50,000 to 28.5 million. Ortea previously named a sea snail after Keylor Navas in 2019.
