Fresh Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia this week have deepened Pakistan’s fears of being pulled into the escalating US-Iran conflict.
PAKISTAN FRETS OVER BEING DRAGGED INTO US-IRAN CONFLICT
Islamabad’s hopes of mediating between Washington and Tehran are being tested by fresh Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia this week. Officials and analysts say the strikes have pushed Pakistan’s frustration with Iran to a new level, raising fears of being dragged into conflict.
Pakistan signed a mutual defence agreement with Saudi Arabia last year and has thousands of troops, alongside a squadron of fighter jets, stationed in the kingdom, some deployed near the Saudi-Yemen border. Officials told Reuters that military leaders have conveyed to Iran that attacks on Saudi Arabia amount to attacks on Pakistan, calling it a red line.
Despite the tensions, Pakistan says it remains committed to diplomacy while reaffirming solidarity with Riyadh.
