US moves to set stricter rules for foreign students and journalist visas

The Trump administration has finalized a rule setting fixed time limits on F, J, and I visas for international students, exchange visitors, and foreign journalists, replacing the current duration-of-status system.

US to Tighten Visa Rules for Students, Journalists

According to Reuters, the Department of Homeland Security’s new rule caps student and exchange visas at four years, while journalist visas would be limited to 240 days — or 90 days for Chinese nationals — down from durations that previously ran for years. The rule also halves the post-graduation grace period from 60 to 30 days and bars students from changing “educational objectives” or transferring schools without authorization. DHS cited a sharp rise in such visa admissions, saying oversight has become challenging. The rule takes effect 60 days after federal register publication, pending congressional review.
