Top seed Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Jasmine Paolini were eliminated from the Italian Open on a day of upsets, while Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka suffered a shock 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 third-round exit to Sorana Cirstea at the Italian Open Saturday, joining Novak Djokovic in an early departure from the Foro Italico. Sabalenka, who required a medical timeout for a hip and lower back issue, admitted, “I feel like my body was limiting me from performing on the highest level.”
Defending champion Jasmine Paolini also crashed out, falling 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 to Elise Mertens after failing to convert three match points. “I didn’t make the most of my chances,” a disappointed Paolini said. Meanwhile, home favorite Jannik Sinner extended his winning streak with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sebastian Ofner. Coco Gauff advanced after a grueling three-set battle, while fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was upset by Mariano Navone in straight sets.
