VIA CBS NEWS ON X:

A Texas family has sued OpenAI, alleging that advice from ChatGPT contributed to their 19-year-old son’s accidental overdose and death.

A Texas family has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that advice provided by ChatGPT contributed to the accidental overdose and death of their 19-year-old son, Sam Nelson.

According to CBS News, Sam’s mother, Leila Turner-Scott, said she holds “Open AI and the creators… the people who bypassed safety guards and took away safety nets” responsible for her son’s death.

In response, an OpenAI spokesperson described the incident as “a heartbreaking situation” and noted that the interactions involved “an earlier version of ChatGPT that is no longer available.”

The company added: “ChatGPT is not a substitute for medical or mental health care, and we have continued to strengthen how it responds in sensitive and acute situations.”
