The top U.S. general in Europe has warned the Pentagon that a shortage of Navy destroyers may force him to prioritize defending the U.S. homeland over Israel.
U.S. Commander Says He Lacks Forces To Defend Israel
Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, head of U.S. European Command, sent written notification to senior Pentagon officials this week saying he lacks sufficient naval forces to keep protecting Israel from Iranian ballistic missiles, according to a report by The Washington Post.
Without another Navy destroyer, Grynkewich said he would be forced to choose defense of the U.S. “homeland” over Israel, officials familiar with the correspondence said.
The warning comes five months into the Iran war, as near-daily attacks have resumed following the collapse of peace talks and drained U.S. supplies of key defensive weapons. The Navy has been particularly strained by the Trump administration’s blockade of Iranian ports, launched in response to Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Pentagon declined to comment, while U.S. European Command and the Israeli Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment, The Post reported.
