Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to “clashes and even conflicts” during a wide-ranging Beijing summit that also covered trade and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned US President Donald Trump that mishandling Taiwan could severely damage bilateral relations, according to Nigerian Tribune.
The two leaders met in Beijing for over two hours, covering trade, Taiwan and global security. Xi told Trump: “The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”
Xi also stated: “Taiwan independence and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water.”
On trade, Xi said: “Facts have shown time and again that trade wars have no winner.” Both leaders agreed Iran must not develop nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open.
Tesla’s Elon Musk, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and Apple’s Tim Cook attended part of the meeting.
