Trial opens for ex-school administrator over 6-year-old’s shooting of Virginia teacher

The criminal trial of former Richneck Elementary School Assistant Principal Ebony Parker opened Monday in Virginia, where she faces up to 40 years in prison for allegedly ignoring warnings about a 6-year-old carrying a gun on campus.

Former assistant principal Ebony Parker stood trial Monday in Newport News, Virginia, on eight counts of felony child neglect over a 2023 incident in which a 6-year-old boy shot first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner, wounding her in the chest and hand.

Prosecutors allege Parker disregarded multiple warnings from teachers that the boy had a gun in his backpack, instructing staff not to search his belongings. Zwerner survived the shooting and later won a $10 million civil judgment against Parker.

Parker’s defence argued she “did not have a legal duty to protect Miss Zwerner.” Court documents, however, allege she showed “reckless disregard for human life.”

The boy’s mother, Deja Taylor, was previously sentenced to nearly four years in prison on related charges. The trial is expected to conclude within three days.
