Secret Service kills gunman after White House checkpoint shooting

A gunman was shot dead by the US Secret Service after opening fire at a White House security checkpoint, prompting a brief lockdown and leaving a bystander injured.

The US Secret Service has killed a man who opened fire on officers at a White House security checkpoint on Saturday, triggering a brief lockdown of the complex.

Officials said the suspect approached the checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, pulled a gun from a bag and began shooting. Agents returned fire, striking him. He was taken to hospital where he died.

A bystander was also wounded, though it remains unclear who fired the shot that injured them.

Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best, who reportedly had prior encounters with authorities and documented mental health concerns.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House during the incident but was unharmed. The FBI and other agencies are assisting investigations as the Secret Service reviews the shooting and its circumstances.
