Iran may be aiming for something far more lasting. According to Iran International, fears are growing that Tehran is laying the groundwork for a Chinese-style system of digital control that keeps citizens under constant online surveillance.
The alarm was raised after a former state media chief claimed the government had imported Chinese technology designed for a “permanent internet shutdown.” But experts say the real objective is not a complete blackout. Instead, authorities reportedly want a tightly controlled national intranet where access is filtered, monitored, and easier to regulate.
The strategy could allow the government to limit dissent while keeping businesses and essential services online. The big question, however, is whether Iran has the technology and infrastructure needed to make such a system work in the long run.
