US immigration authorities have arrested Mauritanian national Habib Selah, following allegations of asylum fraud, according to Peoples Gazette.
Selah reportedly entered the United States in 2023 near Lukeville, Arizona, and later applied for asylum on grounds of being gay. While his application was still pending, he allegedly married a woman and secured employment as a corrections officer in Indiana.
Investigators say the marriage raised red flags about the credibility of his claim, prompting ICE action. The Department of Homeland Security says he will remain in custody pending removal proceedings, as officials consider his asylum case potentially fraudulent.
The case has sparked debate around immigration screening and asylum verification processes in the US. Reports from Peoples Gazette news outlet coverage details.
