The MV Hondius has arrived in Rotterdam for disinfection and quarantine after a deadly hantavirus outbreak that killed three and triggered international health monitoring.
The MV Hondius cruise ship carrying a hantavirus outbreak has docked in Rotterdam for disinfection after a voyage that triggered global health alerts. The ship had 25 crew and two medical staff onboard after passengers disembarked in the Canary Islands. At least 11 cases and three deaths were confirmed, first cruise outbreak.
Crew are quarantined and tested in Rotterdam under strict containment protocols. “Luckily so far the crew has suffered no symptoms,” Yvonne van Duijnhoven said.
Decontamination teams in PPE began work as authorities prepared three-day cleaning of the vessel. Harbourmaster said: “I think it’s unacceptable to say no, you’re not welcome in the biggest port of Europe,”
One Canadian tested positive and WHO was notified. Risk to public remains very low, officials said in Rotterdam monitoring continues today.
