Iranian authorities held state-sponsored mass weddings in Tehran for hundreds of couples who pledged to sacrifice their lives in the ongoing war against the United States and Israel.
Iranian authorities conducted mass public weddings in several major squares across Tehran late Monday for couples enrolled in a state-sponsored “self-sacrifice” scheme, broadcasting the ceremonies on state television to boost wartime morale.
More than 110 couples participated in the Imam Hossein Square ceremony alone, arriving in military jeeps with mounted machine guns before being married on a stage presided over by a cleric, decorated with balloons and a giant image of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
“Certainly, the country is at war, but young people also have the right to marry,” one young woman in a white Islamic bridal dress said beside her groom.
Another groom noted the occasion coincided with the anniversary of the Prophet Ali’s marriage, saying, “We received their blessings. Furthermore, we came to offer our best wishes to the people in the streets.”
Iranian authorities say millions, including parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and President Masoud Pezeshkian, have enrolled in the self-sacrifice scheme.
