Twins born minutes apart confirmed to have two different fathers, DNA results reveal

Twin sisters Lavinia and Michelle Osbourne discovered through DNA testing that despite being born minutes apart from the same mother, they have different biological fathers — a phenomenon so rare only around 20 cases have ever been identified worldwide.

A DNA test bought out of curiosity led to a life-altering discovery for twins Lavinia and Michelle Osbourne — they have different fathers.

The sisters, 49, were conceived through heteropaternal superfecundation, where two eggs from the same cycle are fertilised by sperm from different men. Only around 20 cases have ever been identified worldwide, making them the only documented case in the UK.

For Lavinia, the news was devastating. “She was the one thing that belonged to me, the one thing that I was certain about,” she said. Michelle, however, felt differently: “I’m still in amazement that this can actually happen.”

Both sisters have since found their biological fathers. Despite everything, their bond remains unshaken. “We’re miracles,” Lavinia says. “We’re always going to have a closeness that can’t be broken.”
