Virginia court rejects redistricting map in blow to Democrats

The Virginia Supreme Court struck down a Democratic-backed congressional map, reshaping the battle for House control and intensifying national redistricting disputes ahead of the midterm elections.

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down the state’s newly approved congressional map, dealing a setback to Democratic hopes of retaking the House in November. The ruling invalidated voter-approved redistricting plans expected to expand Democrats’ advantage from 6-5 to 10-1, amid a broader national battle over congressional maps.

Democrats condemned the decision, with Gavin Newsom saying: “Virginia’s voter-approved maps thrown out. MAGA has rigged the system.” Hakeem Jeffries called the ruling “an unprecedented and undemocratic action that cannot stand,” while Republicans praised the court’s decision as protecting fair representation.

The ruling follows recent GOP-backed redistricting efforts in several states and a U.S. Supreme Court decision weakening parts of the Voting Rights Act. Analysts say Democrats remain favoured to win the House, though the decision narrows their potential seat gains and increases reliance on competitive swing districts in November.
