Pope Leo issues stark warning on artificial intelligence and its threat to world peace

Pope Leo XIV says AI control must not remain in the hands of “a few” as he releases his first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas.”

Pope Leo XIV has warned that artificial intelligence is fueling global conflicts and must not be controlled by a powerful few, releasing his first major theological document Monday at the Vatican.

The 235-page encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas” (“Magnificent Humanity”), calls for robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, and strict ethical constraints on AI use in warfare.

The pope also declared the traditional “just war” doctrine “now outdated,” arguing military force is only justified for “self-defense in the strictest sense.”

“The construction of a world in a state of perpetual conflict is an evil and must be named for what it is,” he wrote.

The document was unveiled alongside Chris Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, marking the first time a pope personally presented an encyclical to the world.
