According to The Punch, Pope Leo XIV has issued a striking apology for the Vatican’s historical role in justifying and legitimising slavery, calling it a “wound in Christian memory.” In a major text titled Magnifica Humanitas, he admitted that Church institutions once owned slaves and at times regulated or endorsed forms of subjugation, even referring to “infidels” in earlier doctrines. The Pope said this delayed moral reckoning cannot be ignored and formally asked for forgiveness on behalf of the Church.
He also warned that the modern world risks creating “new forms of slavery” through the digital economy and unchecked technological systems. The statement builds on past papal apologies but goes further by acknowledging direct institutional involvement.
