Marine scientists have uncovered a staggering 1,121 new marine species in just one year, setting a new record for ocean discoveries and giving researchers fresh insight into life beneath the waves.
According to ABC News, the discoveries came through the Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census, a global mission exploring some of the planet’s least-known waters.
The finds include ghost sharks, vivid orange shrimps, sea urchins, ribbon worms and strange bristle worms living inside glass sponges deep under the ocean surface. Scientists say the number marks a 54% jump in annual species discoveries.
Researchers warn that up to 90% of ocean species may still be undiscovered, raising fears many could disappear before they are even documented.
