US envoy claims Greenland oil could ease Hormuz energy crisis

A US envoy has claimed Greenland’s untapped oil reserves could ease global energy pressure from the Strait of Hormuz crisis, drawing pushback from Greenlandic officials.

US envoy Jeff Landry has said Greenland could help ease global oil pressure caused by the Strait of Hormuz disruption linked to the Iran war.

Speaking after a visit to the Danish territory, Landry said, “Greenland could be exporting 2 million barrels of oil a day right now,” adding it could relieve pressure on global energy routes.

He linked the potential output to stabilising prices after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil corridor.

The envoy said production could begin “within 10 months,” but Greenlandic officials rejected US pressure, insisting the territory is “not for sale.”

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reaffirmed Greenlanders’ right to self-determination after meeting the US delegation. The comments come as Brent crude prices remain elevated amid ongoing regional tensions.
